US Cyclohexane Exports up 52% Through June, Mainly on Western European Shipments

The United States exported 118,500 tons of cyclohexane through June 2017, up 52% from the same period in 2016. Shipments hit a new monthly high of 35,000 tons in May, but slowed to 8300 tons in June.

Belgium was the top volume and growth destination for US cyclohexane exports June YTD, followed by Mexico, Netherlands and Spain. The average price was $905, down slightly from earlier in the year.

The volume of cyclohexane traded globally in 2016 was 1.4 million tons, up 4% from the prior year. Through June 2017, global trade volume was down 8% from the prior year.

Western Europe is the world’s largest cyclohexane importing region, importing nearly 500,000 tons in 2016. Most of this, 333,000 tons, was from the Middle East, followed by Asia-Pacific with 89,000 tons, and North America with 63,000 tons.

Western Europe’s import sources changed in 2017. Preliminary June YTD data shows imports down slightly, with North America as the top supplier, followed by Middle East and Asia-Pacific. Western Europe’s intra-regional trade was down substantially in the first half of the year, noting the closure of UK capacity at the beginning of the year.
