In 2016 Africa imported over 2.4 million tons of ethylene polymers from sources outside the region. This was down 1% from the prior year.
The Middle East supplied over 1.4 million tons of Africa’s import total for the year. Imports from Asia-Pacific were 500,000 tons; from Western Europe, 245,000 tons; from North America, 210,000 tons.
Growth of the African import market has fluctuated widely from year to year. There were substantial gains on imports in 2015 versus 2014 and also 2014 versus 2013, but 2016 saw declines.
